Czech Language A2 Exam for Permanent Residency in the Czech Republic: Changes from April 2026 and How to Prepare

From April 11, 2026, the Czech language exam at the A2 level for obtaining permanent residency in the Czech Republic will undergo changes. The Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic has officially confirmed that after five years of using the current version, the exam has been updated to meet modern requirements and international standards.

If you are planning to take the A2 exam for permanent residency, it is important to familiarize yourself with the changes and prepare effectively. The changes apply to all foreigners who have their exam scheduled from April 11, 2026, onwards. If your exam is before this date, you will take the existing (current) version of the A2 exam.

What Will Change in the New A2 Exam

  • New Task No. 1 in the written part

  • New Tasks No. 1, 2, and 3 in the oral part

The main focus of the new A2 exam:

  • Real-life everyday communication situations

  • Active oral expression

  • Independence and initiative of the candidate

  • Communication typically encountered by foreigners in the Czech Republic (work, offices, interaction with colleagues and customers)

Is the New A2 Exam More Difficult?

The exam itself has not become more difficult, but it is more practical. The biggest challenges are usually for those who prepare “generally in the language” rather than specifically for the A2 exam format. If you know the structure of the exam, the types of tasks, and the examiner’s requirements, you have a high chance of passing on your first attempt.
