Everything you need to know about CERMAT, grammar schools, and secondary schools in the Czech Republic
If you plan to study in the Czech Republic or simply want to understand the local education system, it is important to know what CERMAT is, the difference between a grammar school (gymnázium) and a secondary school, how long students study depending on when they enter, and what sets these types of schools apart. This article covers all of these questions to help you navigate the Czech education system.
What is CERMAT and why is it important?
CERMAT is the organization that prepares and administers standardized exams for students applying to grammar schools and secondary schools in the Czech Republic. These exams are crucial, as they determine which school a student can attend. They focus on mathematics and the Czech language, and the results play a key role in admissions.
Who must take the CERMAT exams?
All students applying to grammar schools or secondary schools must take CERMAT exams. Elementary school is compulsory until the 9th grade, after which students choose the type of school to continue at. The CERMAT results decide who qualifies for prestigious grammar schools and who proceeds to vocational secondary schools.
What is the difference between grammar schools and secondary schools?
-
Grammar school (gymnázium): Provides general education and prepares students for university. It does not train for a specific profession but equips students with broad knowledge.

8-year grammar school (after grade 5)

Secondary school: Prepares students for specific professions (technical, business, pedagogical, medical, etc.). Graduates also receive a maturita, which allows them to either continue to university or enter the workforce.
How long does study last?
-
After 5th grade: 8 years (until around age 19)
-
After 7th grade: 6 years (until around age 19)
-
After 9th grade: 4 years (until age 18–19)
Vocational secondary schools also last 4 years.
Can I continue to university after secondary school?
Yes. After graduating from either a grammar school or a vocational secondary school with a maturita, you can apply to university. Grammar schools prepare primarily for academic study, while vocational schools provide both career options and the possibility of higher education.
